Virginia Beach with Restoration Project + Boardwalk looking north toward the Virginia Beach Pier
Virginia Beach + Boardwalk and bicycle path taken from timeshare resort condo balcony
looking north toward the Virginia Beach Pier at 16th Street

The black pipe winding down the beach is part of the Virginia Beach sand restoration project that was going on while we were there this trip.
The barge with the engine and sand+water pump was parked at the south end of Virginia Beach at the edge of the Rudee Inlet where it was pumping sand from the bottom of the channel. A bulldozer was parked at the end of the pipe on the beach and the operator pushed the pile of sand that had been pumped out of the pipe out level on the beach every few minutes. Photo taken in May 2004

Beach Restoration Pumping Barge at Rudee Inlet - 2004
Beach Sand Restoration Pumping Barge parked at Rudee Inlet - pumped 24 hours a day.

Every few hours it would change position slightly to suck the sand from a different part of the bottom of the
Rudee Inlet Channel. You could hear the big diesel engine pump running some distance away. This is taken in the early evening when the lights in the barge were on. The pipe from from the barge pump carrying the sand down the beach to the bulldozer is in the foreground.

Virginia Vacation Beaches - south end of Virginia Beach, Boardwalk, & Bicycle Trail
View of south end of Virginia Beach, Boardwalk, and Bicycle Trail from Clarion Time Share Resort
Condo Balcony on South corner of 6th floor. Some activity for everyone in the Family. Picture taken
looking south toward Rudee Inlet where many boats entered and departed.

(Most of the beach resotoration pipe is covered up here.) Picture taken early in morning when watering
truck came and men watered many of landscaping tree plantings not covered by the lawn sprinklers.
The colorful roof at the bottom of the picture is the beachfront Watermans Restaurant which was
adjacent to the Clarion Time Share Resort where we stayed - good restaurant

Virginia Beach Clarion Time Share Condo Resort
Clarion Time Share Condo Resort Picture taken from the beach front Boardwalk in front of the Resort.
The beach side front of the Watermans Restaurant is to the left. Could do a great Virginia Beach Picture Album just from this Virginia Beach Boardwalk and sandy beach area.
See beach view from condo below

View from Virginia Beach Clarion Time Share Condo Resort
View from 6th floor Resort Condo patio door window and balcony - 1 bedroom condo apartment was small, but plenty of room for just my wife and I. Beach and ocean view from room was great + could see boardwalk and bicycle path & Rudee Inlet from balcony as can see two pictures above.

Virginia Beach Boardwalk Carnival - Virginia Vacation Beaches Attraction
Virginia Beach Boardwalk Carnival - usually only open on weekends when there were larger crowds on the Boardwalk and Beach. Seemed like an expensive piece of Oceanfront real estate to locate a Carnival on.
See Virginia Beach and area Attractions, Info & Links on Virginia Vacation Beach Attractions + Virginia Beach Pictures page on Affordable US Vacation Beaches site

Virginia Beach Boardwalk - Man washing dogs
Could see many interesting & fun things while walking on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk - this is a guy washing his dogs at one of many showers available as you came off of the sandy beach back up
to resorts. Dogs weren't allowed on the sand beach at the "busy" times ot the year.

Virginia Beach - Parasail launch - looks like fun
Two Parasail boats launched "riders" in front of our condo - you can actually see both of them in this picture - one is in background with a rider high in tow. Was fun to watch them take off and "land."
(Might be fun to have binoculars to view this - camera zoom viewfinder helped some)

Sunset from Boardwalk - blue & pink clouds - Virginia Beach
Colorful blue and pink clouds picture taken from Boardwalk after a short shower in evening about sunset.
Could do a great Virginia Beach Picture Album just from Boardwalk Photos

Historic Cape Henry Lighthouses - Old 1791 and "new" 1881 replacement lighthouse - Virginia Beach

Old Cape Henry Lighthouse - Virginia Beach
Old Cape Henry Lighthouse at north end of Virginia Beach - built of bricks in 1791. Great view from top. Light has been removed so can walk around and see in all directions. "New" replacement Cape Henry Lighthouse is less than a block away - built in 1881 - now has been replaced by an electronic signal tower

Old Cape Henry Lighthouse base - Virginia Beach
Steps up to base of brick Old Cape Henry Lighthouse (already had 160 steps to come up from gift shop to here) - then 189 steps up the Lighthouse spiral metal staircase to the top - the view is worth the climb!

Old Cape Henry Lighthouse metal stairs - Virginia Beach
Old Cape Henry Lighthouse noisy metal stairs to top for a great view - 189 steps - we counted!

New Cape Henry Lighthouse - Virginia Beach
View from top of Old Cape Henry Lighthouse - in glassed in viewing area where light used to be - (can see reflection patterns of steel reinforcements on outside of the glass.)

Can see "new" 1881 Lighthouse plus caretaker houses and small fish oil (later Kerosene) fuel storage shed in foreground. Oil for light had to be hand carried to the top by the caretaker.  Short tower is new electronic signal. To web page with Info on both original and "New" Cape Henry Lighthouse.

new electronic Lighthouse - natural Virginia Beaches area
Area of beach on the Naval Station near where lighthouses are located where they do Navy beach landing exercises. New electronic signal tower is at top. There are many natural beach areas in the Virginia Beach area which offer wildlife viewing and some even camping. See "Other Beaches" link below.

We want to vacation here again! Will try for or either late May or late September when are no "crowds." Need more time to better check out the many great local area attractions and walk the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and sandy beach! Some great other natural unimproved beaches in the area too.

See more about scenic "natural" Virginia Beach area beaches, many which offer wildlife viewing and camping - Info, Links, and pictures at this Other than "the" Virginia Beach beaches page
