The black pipe winding down the beach is part of the Virginia Beach sand restoration project that was going on while we were there this trip.
The barge with the engine and sand+water pump was parked at the south end of Virginia Beach at the edge of the Rudee Inlet where it was pumping sand from the bottom of the channel. A bulldozer was parked at the end of the pipe on the beach and the operator pushed the pile of sand that had been pumped out of the pipe out level on the beach every few minutes. Photo taken in May 2004

Beach Sand Restoration Pumping Barge parked at Rudee Inlet - pumped 24 hours a day.
Every few hours it would change position slightly to suck the sand from a different part of the bottom of the
Rudee Inlet Channel. You could hear the big diesel engine pump running some distance away. This is taken in the early evening when the lights in the barge were on. The pipe from from the barge pump carrying the sand down the beach to the bulldozer is in the foreground.

Condo Balcony on South corner of 6th floor. Some activity for everyone in the Family. Picture taken
looking south toward Rudee Inlet where many boats entered and departed.
(Most of the beach resotoration pipe is covered up here.) Picture taken early in morning when watering
truck came and men watered many of landscaping tree plantings not covered by the lawn sprinklers.
The colorful roof at the bottom of the picture is the beachfront Watermans Restaurant which was
adjacent to the Clarion Time Share Resort where we stayed - good restaurant
